How to wear white after Labor Day

For years we’ve been told wearing white after Labor Day is the ultimate fashion faux-pas…however, I would like to respectfully disagree.  Wearing white after Labor Day, when done correctly, is very chic and modern, and will set you apart.

The key to wearing white post-Labor Day is the material you choose.  During the summer months, white comes in linen, cotton, organza and other light-weight materials; after Labor Day, you should opt for chunky knits, wool or cashmere garments.

In the outfit above, I used white wool pants with a windowpane print and paired them with a black wool sweater.  To help the outfit pop, I added leopard-print ankle boots with a gold-heel detailing, a plum leather handbag and a black and grey felt fedora.  This would be the ideal outfit for a fall lunch with the ladies, or a trip to see the changing leaves.

You can take post-Labor Day white to the office.  In the outfit above, I paired a cream chunky cable-knit sweater with a cream wool skirt and a blue and green flannel button-up shirt.  To add another pop of color, I added some burgundy tights and beautiful brown leather riding boots along with a two-tone leather handbag.  To top off the outfit, I added a grey herringbone jacket. 

You could also make white work for a dressier occasion like a holiday party – in the outfit above, I have taken a cream cashmere/wool blend sweater paired it with a wool jacquard cream pencil skirt.  I added blue embellished t-strap pumps for a pop of color, along with a patent blush clutch. To top everything off, I have added a long sequined jacket.

So, be brave, buck the rules, set yourself apart, and dare to wear white!
