How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk Book Review

This book is amazing.  I think as Hannelore gets older it will apply more to us, but I have taken stuff from it and will really start using all the information when she can talk a little more clearly.  However, do you want to know a secret?  There are FANTASTIC ideas on how to get your husband to talk or listen.  Seriously, if you need to crack open your husband this is the book for you (kids work too).  Shhh don't tell my husband. 

Each chapter covers a different "topic".  The other thing that I love about this book is that it is very hands on.  This is a type of book that you want to take one chapter and work on that one chapter for at least a week.  

At the end of every chapter there is an assignment, a chapter review (it is called "A Quick Reminder" in the book), questions and answers, parent's personal stories, and cautions.  There are a TON of comic strip type pictures that role play many different scenarios throughout the book (although there will be that one issue that you have that will not be in there, that always happens to me). 

Here are some examples of what you will find in the book:

Sample assignment- "Think of a problem that comes up regularly in your home that might be eased by the problem-solving approach (explained in book).  Find a time that is good for both of you, a place where you won't be interrupted, and problem-solve with your child." 

Sample question: "What's wrong with saying 'please' to a child if you want him to do something?"  Don't you want to know the answer to that question!  The questions are asked by parents like you and I who are trying to apply the principles in this book.  

Sample Caution- "Children usually object when their exact words are repeated back."  Isn't that the truth?  However, you want them to know that you heard them.  So what do you do.  The book gives great advice. 

I think this book is great for parents with children of all ages, but like I said above, if your child can't fully communicate with you then you won't be able to apply everything in this book right now.  However, there are great habits to be setting right now!
