Here's 3 Quick Ways to do Your Hair This Summer: Plus Ways to Keep Your Hair Healthy During the Summer
Summer can be really hard on our hair.  The chlorine from the pool and the sun can really take a toll on our hair.  As I have gotten older I have been more aware of things like this and I want to continue to take care of my hair during the Summer.

Also, who has a ton of time to do hairstyles that take longer than 5 minutes?  Not me.  With the kids being restless or even being on vacation during the Summer I need to have fast and easy.  I also like to pull it back out of my face or even off my neck without it looking too boring.

I want to share with you some of my Summer hair care tips, but first of all I want to share three quick ways to do your hair this Summer.   First off, I do want to give you one tip to begin.  That is to go as long as you can between "hair washings".  I can go 4 days between my "hair washings".  I had to build up to that slowly though.  It is so much better for your hair if you can spread them out.  I will also say that usually the first day I wear my hair straight (some days I might pull it up wet in a bun, but usually I wear it straight).  Then usually on the third day I curl my hair just to give it a different look.

Braid Crown

I usually do this on day four.  I like to do this style with curly/wavy hair.  This style gets many compliments EVERY SINGLE TIME I wear it.  I am NOT good at braids so I promise this is simple.
  1. Gather 1-2 inches along the hair line on one side of your part.  Gather more if you want a thicker braid or less if you want thinner.
  2. Braid that section.  Not a french braid, just a plain old braid.
  3. Tug and pull strands to loosen the braid then put an elastic in to hold it.
  4. Do the same thing on the other side of your part.  So you should have 2 braids (one on each side of your face).
  5. Bring back one braid around the crown of your head and pin the braid to the crown of your head.
  6. Bring the other braid back and lay above the first braid, make sure to hide the "tails" of the braids.  Secure with bobby pins.
Side Twist Ponytail

This hairstyle is so easy and I like how it looks different from just a regular low side ponytail.
  1. Grab about a 2 in x 2 in square on the top part of one side of your part.  I usually do the side where their is less hair (so the side where my part is).
  2. Separate that chunk of hair in two sections.
  3. Twist the bottom section over the top section.
  4. Add more hair to each section and twist the bottom section over the top section.
  5. Continue twisting around head.
  6. Once the twist reaches the other side then secure it with an elastic.
  7. Just above the elastic split the hair and flip the tail through the hole.  Kind of like you do with a topsy tail.
Double Wrapped Ponytail

Give this one at least 2-3 tries, even if you don't like the way it turned out the first time.  Of all of them I feel this one has the greatest learning curve, but I can whip this out fast and I like how "different" it looks.  I swear every time I do it I get faster and it gets easier and more secure.
  1. Pull hair half up and secure with small elastic.
  2. Take a section of hair from below the elastic.  (I take it slightly from the left of the elastic.)  Wrap it around the elastic.
  3. Bobby pin to head.
  4. Gather the rest of hair into a low ponytail.  HOWEVER, MAKE SURE TO LEAVE A THIN LAYER OUT OF THE PONYTAIL NEAR THE NAPE OF THE NECK.
  5. Split the layer that was left out into two sections.  Then wrap around the elastic.
  6. Secure with bobby pins.  Also, you should be able to take the bobby pins out from the first wrap, but if you can't see them I say just leave them in.

I hope you give each of these hairstyles a shot.  When I say that I am not good with hair I am serious!  It is not a talent I was given.  However, I take pride in making it look a little better than just straight or curly.  So please believe me when I say they are simple.

Now quickly before you leave this page to go on with your busy life I want to share my thoughts about why it is extra important to take care of your hair in the Summer.  I also have some great tips to help you as well.

General tips that you should be doing year round
  1. Try to go as long as you can between washings.  Also, pick a shampoo and conditioner that is geared to what YOUR HAIR needs.  That is why I like Schwarzkopf Gliss™ products.  They have the following sub-lines: Ultimate Repair (this is for really damaged hair), Ultimate Moisture (for dry hair), Oil Nutritive (for split ends), Extra Volume (for added volume), and Color Guard (for protecting hair).  I like it because there is a shampoo, conditioner, and one treatment for each of the sub-lines.  That way I know that I can get everything all together that work towards treating the same thing.
  2. Be care when you comb your hair wet.  Make sure you either comb with a wide toothed comb or a brush that is designed to comb wet hair.

  3. I am not for weighing hair down with a ton of products, but there is always something that you are looking to do with your hair.  Again that is what is great with Schwarzkopf Gliss™ products because the guess work is taken out of what to get.  Go with the treatment that comes in the sub-line and use it.

Reasons to take extra care of your hair during the Summer
  • Chlorine from pools can damage your hair and make your strands become brittle.  The chlorine can also remove the natural oil that covers hair shafts, this makes your hair more susceptible to breakage.
    • One simple way to keep the damage under control is to wet your hair with tap water before getting into the pool.  If you are going to be swimming a lot then think about wearing a swim cap.  Also, make sure you wash your hair immediately after swimming.  Do not allow the pool water to dry on your hair.  Once again using the Schwarzkopf Gliss™ products that will cater to your needs directly following getting out of the pool will help prevent a ton of damage.

  • The sun damages your hair, just like it damages your skin. Your hair can become dehydrated, and cause split ends.
    • Covering your head with a hat or a scarf helps keep this damage under control as well.
Like I said earlier I am excited that we now have the option to get Gliss™ Hair Repair products.  They are new to the US market and I love all the options they have to make it more simple to take care of my hair.  I picked up Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Oil Nutritive Shampoo, Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Oil Nutritive Conditioner, and also Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Oil Nutritive Split-End Serum.  I got them at Walmart.  It was by the hair care section and at the Walmart by me it was near the scalp care section of hair care.  (You can see the sign in the picture below.)  I wanted to share a coupon with you so you can go get these products for yourself!  This coupon will give you $5.00 off TWO (2)  Schwarzkopf® GLISS™ Shampoo or Conditioner or Treatment products!
