Favorite Purchase of 2014

Post written by fashion contributor, Cami

As 2014 winds down (thank heaven) and we look toward 2015, I have paused for reflection.  Like so many others, I have changes I hope for the new year – drink more water, eat more fruits and veggies, read more, focus on relationships (building and strengthening), etc…however, thinking about this stuff too long makes me feel far too serious, so I like to turn my attention to more fun and superficial things.

For the last “fashion post” of 2014, I decided I would highlight a couple of my favorite purchases of the year.  For anyone who knows me, you know I am obsessed with Kate Spade; I purchased my first bag 10 years ago, and haven’t looked back.  Kate Spade is a brand that speaks to me, I think it is important your style says a little about who you are, and who you want to project to the rest of the world.  Kate Spade perfectly blends functionality and fun; the bags are well-constructed and durable, but it is easy to forget the practicality because they are so darn cute.  Kate Spade bags are in the price ballpark of Coach or Michael Kors, but if you keep an eye on their website (unfortunately there are currently no stores in Utah – one of the hardest things about moving back here from Georgia) they have great sales, and if you sign up for emails and/or “Like” them on Facebook or follow them on Instagram, you will be aware of “Secret Sales” and other great deals.  Wow – sorry for the PSA about “Kate”…I’ll get off my soapbox now (as you can tell, I’m obsessed) and move on to one of my favorite purchases of the year…

Although I purchased this bag online between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and so didn’t have it for most of 2014, it definitely was one of my favorite purchases.  This is one of my most conservative “Kate’s” and is named George (after the little British Prince of course) but is referred to as the Southport Avenue Mini Maria on the website (as of the writing of this post, the bag is available at katespade.com and is an extra 25% off).  Ordinarily I hate “practical” bags, but this one is a nice mix of practical and whimsy; the grey leather makes the bag transition seamlessly from jeans and tees to
dresses and a night out as well as from the dreary days of winter through the entire year.  I like the idea of a grey bag over a black or brown one because grey is not a harsh color, and it does well in every season; it also goes well with nearly any color or pattern, so it incredibly versatile.  The whimsy comes into play on the inside – I love the black and white striped lining – I am a sucker for anything black and white, so this interior really sealed the deal.  The size of the bag is perfect for holding the essentials and a few extras, but is not overwhelming.  The leather and hardware are
incredibly durable, and the design is classic and chic.  I look forward to using the bag for years to come.

Another of my favorite purchases of the year is this grey and black top from the J. Crew Outlet, officially called the Factory Leather-Sleeve Tee (as of the writing of this post, the shirt is available at factory.jcrew.com and is an extra 40% off).  As you can tell from both purchases, I have a fairly consistent color-scheme; I enjoy having neutral pieces that are timeless and yet can be brightened up with little effort.  The top is modern and sharp, yet deceptively cozy and easy to wear.  The body of the shirt is made of a cotton blend (feels like a sweatshirt), the sleeves are poly vegan leather and the
back features an exposed zipper.  I love the versatility of this top; I have worn it over a dress, with a skirt, with jeans and a button-up under it or with jeans and just the top.  The top is very easy to dress up or down, and although the leather sleeves and exposed zipper give it a trendy feel, I think it is a timeless piece, and I plan on wearing it for a long time.

I look forward to 2015 for many reasons – not the least of which is seeing what the fashion world has in store for us (quite literally).  I hope you all have a wonderful New Year!
